营养基因组学与营养遗传学是应用人类基因组计划及蛋白质组学、代谢组学等知识技术研究饮食营养与健康之间的相互作用,二者有助于针对群体制定更详细而具体的膳食营养指南;并期望通过基因检测来选择适宜自己的食物,进行个体化的饮食干预及治疗。在胎儿期和儿童期,机体细胞正处于以DNA快速合成为特征的分化、增殖过程中,更易受到干扰而发生改变,因而应加强生命早期营养与内在基因之间交互作用的研究。
