In order to train tank crews in a joint exercise, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency began developing the first realistic virtual battlefield in the early 1980s. The main motivation for this attempt was to reduce training costs, increase safety and mitigate the impact on the environment (explosions and tank tracks can severely damage the training ground). The result of this project was the creation of a SMNET simulation network linking more than two hundred tank simulators in the United States and Germany.
