INTRODUCTION The development of continuous casting and hot-rolling techniques has urgently required a variety of automatic methods for the detection of hot surfaces. This issue has been discussed in many documents recently. However, the automatic detection of hot metal may bring a series of technical problems. The first and foremost issue is the temperature of the material under test. For continuous casting of steel is even higher than 1000 ℃.
