Simao region is located in southwestern Yunnan Province, the territory of ups and downs. The vertical distribution of natural geography in this area is not only reflected in the vertical zone of vegetation, but also in the vertical distribution of indica and japonica rice. According to the survey results, this area is considered to be an indica belt below 1,400 meters above sea level. The elevation of 1,401-1,800 meters is an indica-japonica cross belt and an altitude of 1,800 meters above sea level is a belt of japonica rice. The succession process of indica-japonica rice along with the altitude increase is obvious in terms of the variety ratio of indica and japonica rice or the ratio of cultivated area of main cultivars. Through the investigation of the relationship between the indica and japonica traits and the altitude and the variation of the system, some systematic variations of indica and japonica were found. This is the tracing of the types of varieties which should be noticed during the evolution from indica to japonica. In addition, the phylogenetic relationships of this species to Upland rice and their significance in the classification of rice were also described.
