I still remember the accountancy class that Besos had come to the day before. Projected on the classroom screen is Amazon's online bookstore, the 1999 financial statements, where we were asked to analyze its operations at the most common rates. I was overwhelmed by a string of glorious and ridiculous numbers. 1999 turnover of 1.6 billion US dollars, 17 million customers, the share price hovering at least 50 US dollars, the loss of 720 million US dollars that year, the market value of 18 billion US dollars. I am eagerly looking forward to the “king of online commerce,” throwing out the “when Amazon profits” issue. To my surprise, Bezos did come, he shared with us the growth and future of Amazon, and explained his understanding of the Internet economy, but no one challenged him again for profit. I believe that this innovative young CEO passed to us and to Wall Street investors
