彭蠡小龙脱胎于中古宫亭庙神。佛、道争相降服宫亭庙神,彭蠡小龙代兴。宋初,立庙新建县吴城山,获封顺济侯。熙宁间用兵交趾,显灵助顺加封顺济王,成为长江-鄱阳湖航线上声名显赫的航运保护神。徽宗时屡封至八字王,置专官四时致祭。其祠庙遍及长江-鄱阳湖-赣江区域,扩展至江浙、福建等路。护佑漕运、消除水旱的阴佑功能等诸多因素,推动彭蠡小龙信仰地域扩展甚广。彭蠡小龙信仰兴起与地域扩展反映出国家礼制、地方治理、水运交通与民间祠神信仰间的互动关系。
