In order to understand the true incidence of female incontinence and to facilitate the development of countermeasures, 1050 out of 48,829 women aged 35-74 in four districts of Northern Ireland were surveyed by computer. The total response rate was 65.6% (689/1050). There is no difference between the age of reply and non-respondents, district and social class. The definition of urinary incontinence by the International Society of Surgeons (ICS) is: Unprovoked urinary urination, which can prove to be a social health problem. Of the 392 cases, 85 (21.7%) had panty liners, accounting for 12.3% of the women surveyed, which was a serious case and most consistent with the definition of incontinence in ICS. This group of women accounted for 85.3% (588 cases), the incidence of urinary incontinence was 59%, significantly higher than
