《四库全书》是乾隆帝发起的旷日持久的两大文化工程之一。编纂的过程是对封建传统文化的次全面总结和整理,对保存古代文献起了极大作用,拓宽了学术研究领域,推动了盛世的学术走向全面繁荣,促进了中国古代学术史上著名的“乾嘉学派”的最后形成。但是借聚书、访书之机,清洗了一大批所谓“违碍悖逆”之书,又对保存之书酌量改易,从而达到思想控制的目的,这对当时及其以后整个社会思想文化又造成了无可估量的损失。
