In the late 1980s, five farewell balls were held forMacau’s Hotel Bela Vista as the prospect of demolitionthreatened. The drunken revelries had a bittersweetedge, for reduced to rubble with the Bela Vista’s wallswould have been memories of an older, gentler Macao,epitomised by the colourful if beleaguered 130-year-oldhotel.
