Intestine is among the most sensitive organ to ionizing radiation. The present experement was set out to investigate the acute injuries of small intestine caused by 12C6+ ions. The whole body of Kun-Ming mice were immobilized and irradiated with the plateau region of the beam(energy at 220 MeV/u,LET was calculated to be 13 keV/μm). Mice were sacrificed by cervical dislocation at various times following radiation. The jejunum was dissected and fixed in Bouin’s fixative prior to paraffin-embedding. Tissue was routinely processed and cut into 5 μm sections for hematoxylin and eosin staining to examine the pathological changes.
