The Les Halles market was demolished in the 1970s and replaced by Les Halles Square, one of the so-called “grand projects.” Les Harris Square is a large underground building with five different levels of functionality that can vary widely, including shopping malls, swimming pools, movie theaters, conservatories, libraries, public service offices, underpasses and more. On the lower level there is also the busiest train station in Europe, with 100 million users a year. The train station is the main gateway to Paris. Lack of links with the surrounding city, the park feels insecure and unsuitable as the main public space in Paris; large shopping centers are dark and chaotic with small and disrupted stations. Unlike the traditional “big project” in France, this project seeks to bring together the needs of multiple urban elements, as each element has its own ideas. How to combine the size and the elements? How to organize these “small elements”? How to give a sense of direction?
