Posterity Rock on Mount Yi
Yishan (Mount Yi) is a famous mountain with a time-honored history and culture and is reputed to be “Little Mount Tai.” Yishan is located at the place, 10 kilometers to the southeast of Zoucheng, Shandong, which is the hometown of Mencius.
On Yishan there are many rocks of diversified peculiar shapes, which integrate the essence of the characteristics of Mount Tai, Mount Huang, and Mount Hua.
Posterity Rock is located near the northern gate of Yishan. With a height of four meters, the appearance around the rock is rough. The upper side of the rock is flat, on which previously there was a posterity temple constructed during the Yuan and Ming Dynasties and renovated during the Qing Dynasty. Later, the temple was demolished. On the southern side of the rock, three Chinese characters “Zi Sun Shi”—posterity rock—were inscribed during the Yuan Dynasty. On the sides of the rock there are also inscriptions carved by visitors from successive dynasties. Previously, there stood in the temple a statue of the goddess Yunxiao, who carried a shoulder-bag and seemed to render homage to the mountain. In both the front and back pocket of the bag, there were several children, meaning adding posterity for human beings. If one wished to have children, he (she) could throw a piece of stone into the temple. Of course, this only signified a good wish.
