《太一生水》对《老子》道论有着鲜明的继承性。《老子》对于玄奥道体的构拟体现了浓郁的母性生殖崇拜文化,其对“水”无以复加的赞美的一个深层原因在于看到了水在母性生殖过程中的重要作用,“玄牝”中充盈着水才具有永恒的生殖之力,方可称之为“谷神”。《太一生水》即是在《老子》母性生殖崇拜特色的道论基础上,直接导出“太一”生“水”的命题。《太一生水》的成书,是战国中后期道家吸收阴阳数术等流行思想以充实、改造道论的一次尝试,有着承前启后的重要意义。
