早在七十年代初,国外就开始重视铁基粉末冶金零件在氮基气氛中烧结的研究。1971年初在粉末冶金工厂中试用,但目前已相当普及。例如美国Webster—Hoff公式用氮基气氛生产的材料有不锈钢、铁、黄铜、青铜、铝及其他合金。有的预计:将来美国作为烧结保护气氛的天然煤气中90%改用氮基气氛时,那么每吨粉末冶金制品可节省能耗4.0 ×10Btu,即占全部粉末冶金制品生产能耗的10%。
