In induction logging, there are vertical and radial conductivity changes in the logging medium; in this medium, the basic variable separation can not be applied directly to the PDEs describing the electromagnetic field. With the way defined relative to the vertical coordinates, a common solution to this problem can be devised. This method divides the original two-dimensional (2-D) problem into a set of independent one-dimensional (1-D) problems. The signals in the receiver can be decomposed into: direct signals propagating in the borehole and reflected signals with information on the conductivity of the perimeter of the borehole.
