American writer William Faulkner ’s novel “A Rose for Emily” is full of suspense and fascination and is regarded as a classic of Gothic novels. This dissertation analyzes the tradition in the South of the United States, the failure of Emily’s love, and her inability to adapt to the social changes. She points out that she is a product of a particular social environment, a particular family and historical background. The novel shows the miserable life of women in the South American through the imprisonment of Emily.
