常州地处沪宁铁路中段，京杭大运河穿境而过．交通极为便利，经济、文化比较发达。20世纪初，由于常州紧靠上海、南京大城市，各种思潮、马克思主义学说传播快。五四运动、五卅运动期间，常州民众声援、示威、游行、捐款……表现出了不凡的爱国热忱、旺盛的斗志。
