Texas Instruments is developing an “active” satellite dish for the U.S. Air Force. One technique demonstrated by this antenna is to replace the traveling-wave tube amplifier with solid-state devices in future communications satellite transponders. Because of the reliability, size, weight, high voltage requirements, complexity and cost involved in traveling wave tube amplifiers, the future of this replacement technology is of tremendous importance to the design and operation of satellites. The importance of reliability issues can be seen from the following examples: International Telecommunications Satellite-V, developed by Ford Aerospace, has a total of 27 working TWT transponders, with up to 16 backup TWTs . In spite of this, since no other components seem to be more advantageous in terms of price / performance relationship at present, TWT amplifiers have long been used in spaceborne microwave power
