Japan’s Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. has developed a “different ” computing capabilities of optoelectronic integrated circuits. The integrated circuit can image the difference between two input frames at 10-200 times the speed of conventional electronic integrated circuits. Large-scale integration of such optoelectronic integrated circuits will be used for direct matching of high-speed images. The one millimeter-square optoelectronic integrated circuit is formed by parallel connection of 512 logic cells formed on an indium phosphide substrate with 50 × 30 μm per cell; 256-bit pairs can be processed simultaneously. An exclusive-OR operation produces a frame that indicates the difference between the two inputs.
