Under alkali-flooding conditions, the use of Na2 CO3 can significantly reduce chemical consumption compared to silicates and hydroxides. Studies have shown that the use of Na2 CO3 can greatly reduce ion exchange and mineral dissolution. These results were based on laboratory studies using lye and Wilmstone sand, Ottawa sand and dolomite. In addition, Na2CO3 possesses the additional advantage of being in contact with hard water that the resulting carbonate precipitation does not degrade formation permeability compared to hydroxide or silicate precipitation.
