Astronomers in the European Southern Observatory have announced that they have acquired the clearest images of the lunar surface on the ground. These images were taken with NACO Adaptive Optical Camera. The camera is mounted on the 8.2m diameter Very Large Telescope (NLT). Adaptive optics-based instruments use a bright point light source as a reference to correct the light distortion in the image due to light passing through the atmosphere. The scientists decided to use the moon on a mountain illuminated by the sun as a guide to test the adaptive optical system. The image is taken with a narrowband filter at a wavelength of 2.3 μm with an exposure time of 0.22 s. The lunar surface of the image has a sharpness of about 130 m, which is equivalent to what an astronaut sees at 400 km above the moon.
