北宋官府藏书的机构众多,按藏书性质大致可分为朝廷藏书机构、皇室藏书机构、其他藏书机构三类。其中皇室藏书机构多达十余处,为历朝官府藏书机构之最。其官职设置也很繁杂,等级繁多,任职条件近于严苛,是升任高官大员的必经资历,“一经此职,遂为名流”。这些为造就北宋在藏书文化史上的辉煌,打下了基础。
