Objective To investigate the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) in human gastric carcinoma and its clinical significance. Methods The expressions of VEGF, COX-2 and CD34 in 51 cases of gastric carcinoma were detected by immunohistochemical SP method, and 24 cases of normal gastric mucosa were used as control. Microvessel density (MVD) counts were performed on CD34-positive vessels. Results The expressions of VEGF and COX-2 in gastric cancer tissues were significantly higher than those in normal gastric tissues (P <0.01). The expressions of VEGF and COX-2 were positively correlated with MVD (P <0.01). COX-2 and VEGF were closely related to the depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis and TNM stage (P <0.05 or P <0.01). MVD in gastric cancer was significantly higher than that in normal gastric tissue (P <0.01). Conclusion In gastric cancer, high expression of COX-2 and VEGF may play an important role in tumor angiogenesis and progression.
