People often use “like a person” to describe close friends. New research shows that this does have a physical basis and that the brain treats very close friends as part of it. Researchers asked 22 adults to participate in the trial, including close friends and strangers. They were struck lightly in the trial, meanwhile researchers scanned their brain using magnetic resonance imaging. The results showed that when someone’s brain was slightly shocked, the area in the brain responsible for responding to the threat became active; those areas were almost devoid of activity when they were shocked by strangers; however, When close friends are struck by an electric shock, these areas exhibit the same characteristics of activity as when they were subjected to an electric shock.
