The rapid development of the optical disc industry, along with its advantages in high-density recording, fast retrieval, and ease of supplemental modification, has given rise to a strong interest in the compact disc system. According to the Japan Microfilming Association (JMA), Japan’s use of microfilm and optical discs in 1985 was roughly: 31% and 3%, respectively, of microfilm and optical discs, and 13% and 16% of microfilm and optical discs, respectively. %; 13% of those who use microfiche and try CDs; 5% and 8% of CDs and microfilms, respectively, are used or tried; 48% of users are interested in the system that combines microfilm and CD.
