湖南冷水江钢铁厂于１９８７年、１９８９年相继建成５座安装多火孔环形燃烧器的第二代顶燃式热风炉。投产至今仍正常生产。第二代顶燃式热风炉克服了第一代存在的燃烧口附近炉壳发红、炉顶高温区开大孔或多开孔、火焰长、燃烧不完全、烧坏格子砖及蓄热室气流分布不均匀等缺陷，提高了热风炉的风温、热效率及寿命。
