人们通常认为,儒家美学思想的一个重要特征是讲求朴素与实用,反对奢靡华丽,并且据此把“朴素为美”的美学观升华为中国传统文化的基本观念之一。这样来理解儒家美学观是不全面的。事实上,儒家美学观存在着内在的矛盾,它既有提倡“节用而爱人”即赞同朴素与实用的一面,又有重视外表的“文饰”即提倡绚丽与华美的另一面。在儒家的美学思想体系中,绚丽与华美都是权力、地位和礼仪的象征,又是同他们所提倡的“礼”的思想紧密联系着的。对“朴素为美”的提倡,更多地表现为道家、法家和墨家的美学观。在中国美学史上,儒家美学中对绚丽与华美的赞赏,很难得到民间的认同。追求绚丽与华美的美学态度和艺术风格,还常常受到泛道德化的批判。
