Objective To investigate the expression of ERβ in breast cancer and its relationship with clinicopathological factors. Methods The expressions of ERα, ERβ and PR in 97 cases of primary breast cancer were detected by immunohistochemical S-P method. The levels of ER, PR and clinicopathological parameters were analyzed by biochemical methods. Results The positive rate of ERβ expression in primary breast cancer was 62.9% (61/97). There was no correlation between ERβ and ERα (P> 0.05). ERα, ER, PR and immunohistochemical expression of ER were negatively expressed in breast cancer ERβ positive expression rate of 83.3% (10/12). The positive expression of ERβ was negatively correlated with histological grade (P <0.01). The positive expression rate of ERβ in patients without axillary lymph node metastasis was 81.6% (31/38), and the positive expression rate of ERβ in patients with axillary lymph node metastasis was 5.0% (30/59), both of which were highly significant (P <0.01), and the positive expression of ERβ was negatively correlated with axillary lymph node metastasis. There was no significant correlation between ERβ expression and patient’s age, tumor size, clinical stage, menstrual status and pathological type (P> 0.05). Conclusion ERβ, like ERα and PR, is also a nuclear receptor. ERβ expression is also found in primary breast cancer tissues. The positive expression of ERβin primary breast cancer tissues was negatively correlated with histological grade and axillary lymph node metastasis. There was no correlation between ERβ and ERα expression. ERβ could not be detected by the combination of ER, PR and ERα.
