On May 28, a survey released by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) showed that global software piracy rose last year, in sharp contrast to the declining figures of the past six years. Among countries with the highest piracy rates, China ranks 94% behind Vietnam. The report said pirated software continues to have a huge impact on the software industry and the global economy. Last year, the global software piracy rate increased to 37%, while in 1999 the piracy rate was 36%. Software company losses dropped 3.5% from previous years to just 11 billion U.S. dollars. Experts believe that the main reason for the loss reduction is slow introduction of new products and low prices. BSA vice president Bob Kruger believes that the economic downturn is one of the reasons many companies risk using pirated software. “The economic downturn, business difficulties, how companies have the energy to pay attention to the legitimacy of the software?” He said.
