Bosch introduced the mass-produced common rail fuel injection system for direct injection diesels for passenger cars in June 1997 and Bosch is working with clients all over the world on a number of related project studies. The main difference between a common rail system and a typical diesel injection device is the freedom to choose the injection pressure and timing as well as the pre-injection that is already good for almost all operating points. The purpose of the common rail system is to significantly reduce combustion noise and improve torque curves, especially at low engine speeds. At the same time, emissions must first be controlled within the limits announced by the European regulations in 2000. This article presents experience in combustion applications, as well as customer benefits in terms of torque, power, fuel consumption, and noise. The effect of EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) on the timing of pre-injection and the amount of pre-injection fuel was raised in relation to combustion noise and smoking. It also includes the special requirements of the common rail system for injectors, an extremely important part of the system. It is believed that the resulting emission results and the likelihood of meeting more stringent emission standards demonstrate the potential of this common-rail system.
