Proposed a new construction planning index for the greening in cities and buildings. The new indicator, green area ratio (GPR), is based on a biological parameter commonly referred to as the leaf area index (LAI), which is defined as the sum of single-sided leaf areas per unit area of land. It is very similar to the floor area ratio currently used in many cities. GPR allows for more precise regulation of greening without having to exclude a proportion of parcels from building development. It gives the designer flexibility but at the same time guarantees the greening quota in the design. GPR is a basic and important indicator, but it is not the only index. A broader set of indicator systems still needs further development.
