Objective To investigate the relationship between plasma brain natriuretic peptide and pulmonary arterial pressure in patients with chronic cor pulmonale. Methods Forty healthy controls (group A), 34 patients with acute exacerbation of CPHD (group B) and 34 patients with exacerbation of CPHD (group C). Plasma levels of plasma BNP were measured by radioimmunoassay in patients with CPHD at acute exacerbation and remission respectively. The levels of plasma BNP were compared with those of healthy controls and their correlations with PaO2 and pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) were also analyzed. Results The plasma BNP level in acute exacerbation and remission of CPHD was higher than that in healthy control group, and there was a significant difference (P <0.05) between plasma BNP level and remission stage in acute exacerbation. Conclusion In patients with CPHD, plasma BNP levels may be related to hypoxia and pulmonary hypertension (PAH).
