“,”Objective:This study was performed to investigate facial soft tissue changes in female adultsundergoing orthodontic treatment in thebuccal and temporalregions. Methods:Forty female adultsundergoing orthodontic treatment were selected as the experimental group, including 20 extraction cases and 20 non-extraction cases. The control group consists of 20 adult women without orthodontic treatment. The facial soft tissue was scanned in each patients using the 3 dMDface? scanner before orthodontic treatment (T0), 5 months (T1), 10 months (T2), 15 months (T3) and 20 months (T4) during the treatment. The facial soft tissue of the adult women in the control group wasscanned twice with an average interval of 17.6 months. The T0-T1, T0-T2, T0-T3, and T0-T4 images were superimposed using Geomagic 2013 Wrap to compare the changes of soft tissue depth in the buccal and temporal regions. Results:The soft-tissue draped after 5 months by 0.46 mm intemporal region, 0.55 mm in medial upper buccal region, 0.66 mm in lateral upper buccal region, 0.97 mm in medial lower buccal regionand 1.31 mm inlateral lower buccal region. The soft tissue in upper buccal and temporal region changed in negative direction slightly.Soft tissue in buccal and temporal regionsshowed no difference between extraction and non-extraction groups.Asthe treatment in progress, therewas no significant change in facial soft tissue morphologyafterwards. In the control group, no significant changewas found in thebuccal and temporalregionswithinan average of 17.6 months. Conclusions:No obvious collapse of buccal and temporal softtissue was found in adult patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.Extraction and aging were not the main factors affecting the facial morphology in young adult orthodontic patients.
