This article aims to introduce the concept of radar-based rock detection, so that mine managers know what such tools can do for a mining operation. Most people think that the radar can not penetrate the rock at all. In general, this is correct; but for the right type of rock, this is not the case. We’ve successfully penetrated 12,800 feet of rock with our own radar. That is, we have launched radar pulses capable of penetrating 6,400 feet of rock to one of the large discontinuities, and (on the same 6400-foot range) radar reflections (measured on an oscilloscope). The work was carried out at a mine in East Texas.
