The United States has no emergency lane provisions, the corresponding concept is the shoulder (Shoulder). According to the law of the United States, the function of the freeway shoulders is similar to that of our emergency lanes. First, both sides of the expressway are equipped with shoulders. The width of the outer shoulders is usually at least 3 meters and the width of the inner shoulders is at least 1.2 meters. Second, the shoulders can be used for parking or driving a vehicle in a cautious emergency or for carrying out official duties on vehicles. Third, some expressways in the western region allow bicycles to travel on the shoulder. Fourthly, in the morning and evening rush hours, states such as Virginia and Massachusetts allow vehicles to travel on the shoulder to increase traffic efficiency.
