在古刊本《西游记》小说版本中,世德堂本因其独树一帜的金陵派风格插图,在“西游”版画史上具有重要的研究价值。世德堂本许多插图并非完全依据小说文本而创作。通过文本细读和大量的图像对比,可知一些世德堂本插图是通过对其他戏曲插图的景物吸收、人物形象改编、场景整体复制等互文方式而形成。这种小说插图与戏曲插图之间“家族相似性”基因的流转,在于世德堂分流自为戏曲刊本创作插图作为主业的富春堂。富春堂长期形成的戏曲插图舞台化艺术风格是如此地稳定和坚韧,即便是另立门户的世德堂也难脱窠臼,这是世德堂本插图艺术风格形成的根本原因。世德堂本插图形成后,又对后世“西游记”插图和神魔小说插图形成了广泛的影响。
