汉时于文字训诂之学盛行声训。《说文》则是以据形析义之形训为主,但若所训与重要史实、典制、礼俗、风尚有密切关联者,亦多辅之以声训,以揭示形训难以深达的历史文化内涵。且经典多通假用字,不明声训则难以达诂,故《说文》以声训方法,用假借字之义解释所训之字,以与“从某从某”之形训配合,以区别该字之本义和通假义。本文四则意在具体论证:《说文》声训之主要作用即在此两点。
