In the thirteenth century AD, Marco Polo crossed the Taxkorgan in winter. This is perhaps the toughest journey for the legendary traveler since its departure from Venice. Tashkurgan, located at an altitude of 3,100 meters above the Pamirs, is a must for the ancient Silk Road. In the sunny day, from here you can clearly overlook the world’s second peak, K2. As the only minority ethnic group in China that has a European heritage, the indigenous Tajiks still retain the ancient Persian language and tradition. Complex ethnic, religious and international issues make this remote border town mysterious and elusive.
