Hewlett-Packard is developing a new data transfer technology called VFIR (Very Fast IR). The technology can make the infrared device in the future information transfer speed 4 times faster than the current 4Mbps, reaching 16Mbps. HP demonstrated the technology at the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) meeting in April 1998 and expects to put the technology into practical use in 1999. The technology is faster than USB (USB transfer rate is about 12Mbps).
