Microbubbles are particularly stable microbubbles produced in situ to inhibit drilling fluid from leaking into the hypertonic formation. Water-based microbubbles are used in water-based drilling fluids, while oil-based microbubbles are used in non-water-based drilling fluids. In both cases, the microbubbles are composed of specialized polymer- and surfactant-stabilized gas or liquid nuclei that can aggregate in the permeable formation to form a tough, resilient barrier that prevents the formation of Missing. Representative of permeability in the formation of water-wet sandstone, prone to drilling fluid leakage and differential sticking. Other formations consist of sandstone and shale, which are expensive to use with conventional drilling fluid or underbalanced drilling equipment.
