Nitrogen has long been considered an ideal base gas for heat treating atmospheres because it is inert to most materials. The idea of mixing nitrogen with other reactive gases, such as hydrogen, at the optimum ratio is quite attractive. However, most companies use nitrogen in heat treatment at a much higher cost than an atmosphere made with flammable gases. Table I lists some of the typical data. Cited in 1966. In spite of this, the nitrogen-based atmosphere has its use. It is currently used in applications requiring high purity, such as vacuum heat-treated gas quenching processes, welding furnaces for the electronics industry, and general heat-treating processes of high value products or materials.
