Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is mainly derived from the cytoplasm of neurons and neuroendocrine cells. It is a dimeric glycololytic enzyme with two γ subunits, with a total molecular weight of 78 kD. Alpha-gamma hybrid enolase is synthesized in platelets. It is known that elevated plasma NSE levels following severe head trauma are associated with clinical prognosis and elevated levels of NSE in cerebrospinal fluid are found in various neurological diseases. This article mainly discusses the relationship between NSE plasma concentration and clinical prognosis in patients with cerebrovascular disease.
