As a major excitatory structure in biological systems, sodium channels are the target of a series of neurotoxins derived from plant-animal heterologous information systems. According to their physiological activity and binding characteristics, at least nine different sodium channel neurotoxins have been named (Table 1). These toxins can interfere with all three basic functions of voltage-gated sodium channels.
