It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80s came to the hospital. I heard him saying to the nurse that he was in a hurry for appointment(约会)at 9:30.
The nurse had him take a seat in the waiting area, telling him it would be at least 40 minutes before someone would be able to see him .I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy—my patient didn’t turn up at the appointed hour, I would examine his wound. While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor’s appointment.
The gentleman said no and told me that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife .He told me that she had been there for a while and that she had a special disease, I asked if she would be worried if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not been able to recognize him for five years now. I was surprised and asked him, “And you still go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?”
He smiled and said, “She doesn’t know me, but I know who she is.” I had to hold back tears as he left.
Now I realize that in marriages, true love is acceptance of all that. The happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have .Life isn’t about how to live through the storm, but how to dance in the rain.

D. the old man was in a hurry for appointment.

B. The old man needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife.
C. The old man said that his wife had a special disease.
D. The old man’s wife stayed in the nursing home alone.
3. What can we infer from the last paragraph?______
A. People who don’t have the best of everything are the happiest.
B. People who make the best of everything they have are the happiest.
C. People who dance in the rain are the happiest.
D. People who live through the storm are the happiest.

I used to live selfishly, I should admit. But one moment changed me.
I was on my lunch break and had left the office to get something to eat . On the way, I saw a busker(街头艺人),with a hat in front of him. I had some coins in my pocket, but I would not give them to him, thinking to myself he would only use the money to feed his addiction to drugs or alcohol. He looked like that type — young and ragged. But what was I going to spend the money on? Only to feed my addiction to Coca-Cola or chocolate! I then realized I had no right to place myself above him just because he was busking.
I stopped and dropped all the coins into his hat, and he smiled at me, I watched for a while. As selfish as it sounds, I expected something more to come from that moment — a feeling of happiness or satisfaction, for example. But nothing happened. Disappointedly, I walked off. “It proved to be a waste of money,” I thought.
On my way home at the end of the day, I saw the busker again and he was packing up . I watched him pick up the hat and walk to a cafe counter. There he poured the total contents into a tin collecting for an earthquake fund-raising(募捐)event. He was busking for charity(慈善)!
Now I donate any change I have to charity tins and enjoy the feeling of giving.
1.Why did I decide not to spend the money on the busker?______
A. Because the busker looked young and ragged.
B. Because it seemed as if the busker was addicted to drugs or alcohol.
C. Because I was addicted to Coca-Cola and chocolate.
D. Because I was so selfish that I placed myself above the busker.
2. My attitude towards the busker changed with the story going on, which of the following is in the right order?
A. doubtful — generous — disappointed — surprised.
B. selfish — mean — happy — disappointed.
C. mean — generous — disappointed — regretful.
D. doubtful — regretful — generous — disappointed
3. The author intends to tell us from this passage that______ ?
A. Caring others is caring ourselves.
B. No one is supposed to put himself above other people.
C. Never show mercy for those who are addicted to drugs.
D. Never judge a person by his appearance.
4. The second paragraph mainly about______ ?
A. My unwillingness to show mercy for the busker.
B. The importance of being merciful.
C. My hesitation about whether to show mercy for the busker.
D. What I saw during lunch break in the street.
