我市棉田面积71.4万亩,主要分布在沿江的沙洲、常熟、太仓三个县(市)内,属长江老冲积土区。土质沙性较重,70%的棉田为潮沙土和夹沙土,土壤含速效钾较低,每亩为18—24斤(60—80ppm);只有30%为乌夹沙,土质粘性较高,土壤含速效钾每亩30斤(100ppm)左右,含钾中等。沿江老棉田,含速效钾更少,每亩为15斤(50ppm)左右,棉花经常出现早衰,后期红叶茎枯病面积较大,部分还有落叶现象,严重影响产量。我市从1974年开始进行棉花施钾试验,1979—1981年边试验、边大面积推广应用,对棉花起到了较大的增产作用,获江苏省1983年科技改进三等奖。
