The most important issue for the uranium industry in 1989 was that uranium spot prices continued to fall. The monthly price published by NUKEM ranges from $ 11.4 to $ 11.85 per pound in January 1989 to $ 9.0 to $ 9.4 in December. Since spot prices are lower than most producers and many long-term supply contracts are related to spot prices, it is not surprising that some companies shut down their manufacturing facilities in 1989.
