血红蛋白病是血红蛋白(Hb)合成异常的一种遗传性疾病,包括异常血红蛋白病和地中海贫血。近20年来,随着对血红蛋白研究的不断发展,发现的异常Hb已超过300余种,而且新的种类还不断被发现,据统计,全世界血红蛋白病基因携带者有一亿多人。我国人患血红蛋白病者也不少见。地中海贫血在华南地区是一种常见病,异常血红蛋白病在广西、广东、台湾、内蒙古等省(区)和海外华侨中也屡有发现,在我国人中发现的异常血红蛋白已有30种,新的类型还在陆续发现。
