Recent research into the formation of a network of metropolitan cities in the world shows a mixed state of level and regional trends. This article uses data specifically created to assess the relative importance of the two trends in discriminant analysis models and the cosmopolitan urban agglomerations in several regions. It has been found that the importance of regionality in the world’s cities is not inferior to that of rank. This finding is just the opposite of the literature on world cities; in these documents, “world city hierarchy” dominates while the regional dimensions of world cities are relatively neglected. In addition to suggesting that people change the direction of world urban research, the findings of this thesis also have a broader impact on the globalization in a general sense. Globalization is not necessary - I think it is impossible - to create a homogeneous global space, and a single global hierarchy is bound to create a homogeneous space. The process of globalization has always resulted in many large-scale social activities.
