In June 1994, Xiao Huixiang, a Chinese female artist who settled in the United States, returned to Beijing to hold a portrait exhibition at the Central Academy of Art and Design, where she taught at that time. The dozens of portraits presented by her were portrayed by celebrities from mainland China since 1988, a few of which were completed just days before the exhibition.
