由于观念的更新,西方现当代雕塑较古典雕塑在塑造语言方面发生了巨大的变化,其主要表现为形式的变革与材料的拓展。一是形式可以被极端强调,也可以被极端忽略,目的成为雕塑的手段,这构成了现当代雕塑语言的第一个特点——从此,固有的体块及节律被摆脱,真实与“似真”的理想被放弃,文学性与叙事性的内涵被忽略。在材料的扩张方面,二是具体的物质材料要么被极大扩张,要么被无限缩小,万事万物均可作为雕塑的材料,这是现当代雕塑语言的另一个特点——从此,雕塑不再只须是有形的实物,观念本身便成为艺术品的一部分。
